The House
If Ernest Rapeneau transformed his vision
into a distinctive signature, the House
has journeyed through more than a century of history.
Like its founder, it has witnessed every great
transformation of the modern world.
The Founding Spirit of a Visionary
Founded
in 1901
At the dawn of the
twentieth century,
as technological progress
reshaped France,
railways connecting the countryside,
and electricity illuminating its cities
Ernest Rapeneau founded his House in Hautvillers, at the heart of a Champagne region opening itself to the world.
In this era of remarkable progress, the family business took root under the guidance of a man inspired both by the timeless traditions of the terroir and by the spirit of innovation sweeping across Europe.
Resilience
through adversity
The following decade was
overshadowed by the First World War,
which profoundly affected both the
Champagne region
and Europe as a whole.
As new means of communication transformed everyday life and the telephone connected villages for the first time, the House of Rapeneau endured the turmoil, preserving its savoir-faire and safeguarding the culture of Champagne through uncertain times.
In adversity, the strength of family and the resilience of Champagne revealed themselves.
A Bold
New Chapter
The Roaring Twenties brought
the rise of the automobile,
the first commercial flights and
a renewed appetite
for celebration.
As Europe embraced a new beginning, Champagne entered a period of renewed confidence. In 1927, following the official delimitation of the Champagne appellation, Ernest made the decisive choice to specialise exclusively in the Champagne trade.
This visionary decision allowed the House to embrace a rapidly changing world while showcasing the remarkable diversity of its crus.
Recognition & Growth
The economic crisis of the early 1930s shook France
and much of the world.
Yet Champagne reached
a defining milestone.
In 1936, the creation of the
Champagne Appellation d’Origine
Contrôlée (AOC) formally
recognised decades
of collective commitment to excellence.
Having already established a respected reputation,
Ernest Rapeneau seized the opportunity to broaden
the House’s commercial horizons and extend
its influence far beyond Champagne.
Strength &
Legacy
The Second World War once again plunged
the region into hardship.
Through adversity,
the Rapeneau family
remained true to the values that had always guided the House:
transmission,
discipline
and passion.
When peace returned, the House emerged
with renewed purpose, accompanying a rebuilding France as it entered an era of unprecedented
growth and modernity.
An Era of Confidence
Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, the automobile,
television and commercial aviation
brought people closer together.
At the same time, Ernest Rapeneau Champagnes
reached new markets across France before
expanding throughout Europe.
Deeply rooted in tradition,
the family embraced the optimism
of a nation eager to share
its art de vivre
with the world.
Beyond Borders
The 1970s marked
the beginning of a new era
shaped by computing technologies
and the first wave
of globalisation.
The family business continued to grow. Bernard Rapeneau ensured continuity across generations, while the House expanded its resources and entered a new phase of diversification and international development.
Later, Jean-François and Christophe Rapeneau successfully carried the family legacy forward. Together, they strengthened the commercial network, expanded the family’s vineyard holdings and continually elevated the quality and reputation of the House’s Champagnes.
Global Presence
During the 1980s and 1990s, the digital revolution
gathered pace and Europe entered
a new chapter of integration.
Supported by growing exports and ever-greater
mastery of Champagne craftsmanship,
Ernest Rapeneau Champagnes found their place
on tables around the world.
The House established itself
as one of Champagne’s leading
independent family-owned producers,
while remaining faithful
to the values that have shaped
its identity for generations.
An Enduring Vision
As the twentieth century drew to a close
in an increasingly connected world,
Ernest Rapeneau continued to unite
innovation with tradition.
Its story has evolved alongside the modern world itself,
proving that with every technological, economic and cultural transformation,
the pioneering spirit of the House continues to adapt
remaining true to its enduring mission:
celebrating the timeless excellence of Champagne.
