The Founder

A family rooted in Champagne for over a century,
established in one of the world’s
most prestigious wine-growing regions.

The Founding Spirit of a Visionary

The Founding Spirit of a Visionary

Ernest Rapeneau
did not simply create
a Champagne House.

In 1901, in Hautvillers,

—the historic birthplace of Champagne—Ernest Rapeneau founded his wine and Champagne trading house. It was not until 1927, following the official delimitation of the Champagne appellation, that he chose to devote his business exclusively to the trade of Champagne.

His decision proved visionary. At a pivotal moment
in the structuring of Champagne viticulture, new regulations enabled him to select wines with greater precision and consistency, significantly elevating the quality of his House.
Above all, Ernest Rapeneau was driven by an unwavering passion for Champagne.

In 1936,

the creation of the Champagne Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) officially recognised Champagne
as one of the world’s great wines. For Ernest Rapeneau, whose House had already earned a strong reputation, this marked a defining milestone. Encouraged by the growing international demand for Champagne, he expanded his range and strengthened his distribution network, laying the foundations for the House’s continued development.

The Founding Spirit of a Visionary

After fifty years
of dedication,

Ernest Rapeneau retired in 1965, entrusting the House to his two sons, François and Bernard, who had joined the family business in 1944. Bernard later continued his father’s legacy alongside his own sons, Jean-François and Christophe Rapeneau, who would each shape the future of the House in their own way—Jean-François through the development of the brand, Christophe through his relentless pursuit of winemaking excellence.

He created more than a House.
He created a signature.
The signature of a visionary.

A craftsman of elegance.

A guardian of time.

The Founding Spirit of a Visionary

Jean-François

Driven by an entrepreneurial spirit and an instinctive talent for business, Jean-François became one of the key figures behind the House’s commercial expansion.
Always looking beyond new horizons, he pioneered the international development of the brand and played an active role in promoting the French wine industry, serving as a French Foreign Trade Advisor for the wines and spirits sector.

The Founding Spirit of a Visionary

Christophe

After graduating in Oenology from the University of Reims in 1983, Christophe joined the family business.
From the outset, he focused on modernising the winery and production facilities while remaining faithful to the House’s traditional savoir-faire, ensuring authenticity in every cuvée.
His personality reflects the character of Champagne’s three emblematic grape varieties.
The structure of Pinot Noir, demanding precision, discipline and consistency throughout every stage of blending.
The vibrancy of Pinot Meunier, expressing curiosity, energy and a close connection with the vineyard.
And the elegance of Chardonnay, embodied in the refined palate and meticulous judgement that define a true Champagne winemaker.

Today, at the head of the House,

Christophe remains, above all, devoted to the vineyard and to Champagne itself.
Built on long-standing relationships of trust, the House now sources grapes from more than 100 traditional presses across the Champagne region, enabling the creation of rich, complex blends that express the diversity of the terroir while appealing to wine lovers around the world.
